The Flowers at the Edge of the Wetlands

These flowers always remind me of something out of Alice in Wonderland (I refer here to Disney’s version). Every time I see them, I wait for them to start moving with human grace, and to start speaking coquettishly.

The Butterfly in the Bronx

with one comment

I heartily recommend spending the extra few dollars to go into the Butterfly Garden at the Bronx Zoo. (If you’re not absolutely terrified of butterflies, that is.) It’s a great opportunity to get up and close with those wily bugs that you may not have in nature. In addition to all the plants specifically planted to attract the butterflies, there are also dishes of pure butterfly delights waiting to lull these living specimens into a doped up sense of security while visitors gape at them. Pick up a map from one of the employees as you go in — there are dozens of species to identify.

An Egret Hunting

leave a comment »

I promise on my next days off I will take photos of something other than egrets or swans. This constant rain has made it difficult to go out and take new photos, so I’ve been forced into a rotation of some of the same locations and shoots that I would normally rotate in over months.

Until it’s sunny, more egrets! (Sorry.)

The Grizzly on the Rock (Redux)

A spring visit to the grizzlies at the Bronx reveals a grizzly on the same sloping stone as before. This time, of course, the landscape around it has changed a little, but not much else.

The Egret from My Bike

with 2 comments

This is, perhaps, not a particularly good photograph, but it does have a story behind it.

When D came out for a visit, I took him on one of my bicycle rides through some of my favorite spots. It’s a long ride — it’s usually between 13-15 miles, and takes me about three or four hours depending on where I stop to take photos. He, unfortunately, did not listen to me and had only some grapes for breakfast. (I believe he was also adjusting to the earlier time zone.) So when we had gotten almost as far as I like to go, he suggested we go grab some lunch, as he was exhausted and hungry. Fine, I promised him. Except, I still kept stopping every time we came across something interesting on the way back, not knowing how bad his exhaustion really was, thinking it was only that he didn’t want to go further. Finally at one of the stops, he told me, and I promised him that I wouldn’t stop for any bird (save a black crowned night heron, as I’ve never seen one in person), not even an egret. Now that’s love.

Of course, on the way back, what should we see but an egret by the side of the road. As I had said I wouldn’t stop, and I was far enough ahead of D that if I slowed down a little it wouldn’t matter, and there was no traffic, I whipped out my 40D, with its big ole’ 200mm lens, and tried shooting some photos while still riding the bike. Needless to say, it did not work so well, and most of the shots came out blurry, unfocused, or simpy sky shots.
