Debut of the ’09 Cygnets
A quick add on entry this morning to what’s already scheduled to celebrate what some of you passing the duck pond may already have seen — the birth of the next brood of swans! This year our favorite mute swans have hatched four cygnets, cute as could be.
The proud parents are standing on guard, so especially make sure you don’t get too close, as swans are aggressive, and the father will try to chase you away. (Also, why stress them out? (This photo was taken with a telephoto lens through a natural “blind”, from which they could not see me, and is very closely cropped.))

The Egret in the Grass
A very common scene on the East End.
When I was taking this photograph, a truck drove out and parked behind me. The man came out, talked to me for a little while, about how he had seen that I was taking photos of birds, and if I was interested he had this magazine that was all about animals and conservation. For a split second I thought he was trying to sell me something, but as it turns out he was a fisherman who just wanted to share something that was near to his heart. So, anonymous fisherman, if you’re out there, thank you.

The Goslings a-Swimmin’
I arrived at this temporary pond just in time to see Mama and Papa Goose waddling down towards the water, guiding their little ones for a swim. Surprisingly, they were pretty brave, coming very close to where I watched, unmoving, towards the roadside.
