The Woodpecker in the Wild

with 3 comments

This little girl is a Downy Woodpecker, a common sight around here. Much smaller than her cousin, the Red Bellied Woodpecker (also a common sight), I spied this one on a tree in my backyard. A male nearby was foraging at the feeder.

Fun Fact: Lure these fabulous birds to your own backyard with suet in your feeders — they love it!

  1. I have never seen a woodpecker like that before.

  2. Are you outside of North America? They are supposed to be very widespread throughout the United States and Canada, but I have not seen them anywhere off of Long Island (admittedly, I have never looked very hard anywhere else).

This is also a very extreme angle to be viewing a woodpecker at. She was a good ways up a tree that I was only five feet or so from.
