Possibly one of the best aquariums to be found in the area is Atlantis Marine World, over in Riverhead. There’s plenty to see — from clownfish to sting rays (that you can feed!) to sharks (that you can dive with!) to sea lions, monkeys and penguins (I know, what?), there’s something that can entertain everyone.

When it first started, I remember not thinking it was much — basically just a display of their small rescue center — and never wanted to go back. Who wants to see sick seals? Depressing. But slowly over the years they’ve added exhibit after exhibit, and now it’s by far one of the best aquariums to which I’ve been. An added bonus? That admission fee you pay — a lot of that money goes to the rescue center, which does a phenomenal job in rehabilitating and releasing animals that have been stranded, stunned, and otherwise in need of rescue.
