Vacations Past: The Hummingbird on the Branch

I didn’t manage to get that perfect, flying hummingbird shot on this trip in March, nor did I even manage to get as close as I did the June before, but I still think this is a pretty worthwhile shot. After all, how often do you get to see a hummingbird just chilling out on a branch?

Vacations Past: The Snowy Egret in the Garden

The egret sat with his back to me, blindingly brilliant in full sun. In order to avoid overexposing his feathers, I had to ratchet up the shutter speed, and in doing so caused the background (shady ground) to go black. No loss. I think it makes this photo interesting.

I know it’s counter to conventional wisdom about photography, but I much prefer a full, bright sunlight as opposed to the diffused light given by cloud cover. Perhaps it’s because I developed my “style”, as it were, in Southern California, where a photographer rarely gets that coveted cloud cover.
